“How CBRI Roorkee and the Indian Institute of Astrophysics engineered a solar-tracking brass optomechanical conduit to crown Ram Lalla on every Ram Navami.”
On April 17, 2024, millions of viewers worldwide witnessed a precise optical phenomenon inside the garbhagriha of the newly consecrated Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Mandir in Ayodhya. At exactly 12:00 PM on Ram Navami (the birth anniversary of Lord Rama), a bright 58 mm circular beam of natural sunlight settled upon the forehead of the Ram Lalla idol, illuminating the divine tilak for approximately three and a half minutes before gently fading.
The Astronomical Challenge: Shifting Solar Calendar
Designing a solar alignment system for a modern monument is a complex computational task because Ram Navami is governed by the Hindu lunar calendar (Chaitra Shukla Navami), not the fixed Gregorian solar year. The date shifts backwards and forwards by up to 20 days year over year. Consequently, the sun's zenith elevation and azimuth angle at noon in Ayodhya vary significantly on every Ram Navami.
Scientists at the Indian Institute of Astrophysics (IIA) Bengaluru calculated the exact 19-year Metonic solar-lunar cycle for Ayodhya (latitude 26.79° N). Using this ephemeris data, the Central Building Research Institute (CBRI) Roorkee engineered a custom 19-position geared optomechanical apparatus housed on the third floor of the temple superstructure.
Optomechanical Conduit Design
The apparatus contains no batteries, electric motors, or digital computers. It operates entirely as a passive optomechanical precision instrument:
- Aperture 1 (Roof): A weather-sealed quartz window on the third floor directs noon sunlight onto an adjustable primary mirror.
- Transmission Tube: A vertical brass pipe runs down through the storeys, containing three precision-ground achromatic optical lenses that condense the sunlight without causing focal heat accumulation.
- Garbhagriha Mirror: A final 45-degree front-surface silvered mirror directs the converged circular beam through an opening in the sanctum ceiling precisely onto the idol's forehead.
- Alignment Mechanism: A manual gearbox adjusted once annually shifts the primary mirror angle to match the calculated solar coordinates for that specific year's Ram Navami.
