The Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Mandir in Ayodhya stands as the monumental spiritual epicenter of the Vaishnava tradition, marking the site revered by hundreds of millions of devotees as the birthplace of Lord Rama. Consecrated on January 22, 2024, the temple represents an extraordinary synthesis of ancient Nagara stone craftsmanship and cutting-edge seismic and structural engineering. Built across a 70-acre master-planned sacred precinct, the temple honors the ideals of Maryada Purushottam—the embodiment of righteousness, truth, and duty.
Designed by Chandrakant Sompura and his sons Ashish and Nikhil—whose family designed the rebuilt Somnath temple—the complex follows the classic Māru-Gurjara idiom of North Indian Nagara temple architecture. The structure measures 380 feet in length, 250 feet in width, and 161 feet in height, elevated upon a massive stone plinth (jagati) that elevates the sanctum above the surrounding terrain.
The interior progresses through five distinct pavilions: Nritya Mandap, Rang Mandap, Sabha Mandap, Prarthana Mandap, and Kirtan Mandap. The structure is supported by 392 intricately carved pillars across three storeys, each sculpted with deities, celestial dancers, and episodes from the Ramayana according to Shilpa Shastra canons.
To guarantee structural resilience for over a millennium, no structural steel or iron was used in the superstructure. Instead, 4.7 million cubic feet of dense pink sandstone from Bansi Paharpur in Rajasthan were cut, hand-carved, and assembled using interlocking dry-stone mortise-and-tenon joints with copper tie-pins. The foundation features a 14-meter-thick roller-compacted concrete raft engineered by IIT Chennai and CBRI Roorkee.
The Valmiki Ramayana, composed in the first millennium BCE, describes Ayodhya as a magnificent fortified metropolis founded by Manu and ruled by the Ikshvaku monarchs. Archaeological excavations directed by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) at the Janmabhoomi site revealed cultural strata starting from the Northern Black Polished Ware (NBPW) period, confirming continuous urban and religious occupation across more than two millennia.
During the 11th and 12th centuries CE under the Gahadavala dynasty, a substantial stone temple was erected at the site. The 2003 ASI excavation uncovered 50 stone pillar bases arranged in alignment, a circular shrine plinth, and carved architectural fragments featuring divine motifs. In 1528 CE, during the military expedition of Mughal emperor Babur's commander Mir Baqi, the temple was demolished and replaced by a three-domed structure that incorporated parts of the temple's carved stone pillars.
Despite five centuries of legal and political dispute, historical documentation—including revenue surveys, European travelogues, and colonial court records—established that Hindu devotees continuously maintained worship and circumambulation around the site. On November 9, 2019, a unanimous five-judge Constitution Bench of the Supreme Court of India ruled that the archaeological and documentary record supported the Hindu claim, directing the central government to form a trust to oversee construction of the grand mandir.
For devotees of Lord Rama, the Janmabhoomi is considered the most sacred spot on earth. Lord Rama is revered as 'Maryada Purushottam'—the supreme human exemplar of character, filial duty, and righteous kingship. The temple serves as the living heart of Ayodhya, connecting sacred geography across the Indian subcontinent from Janakpur in Nepal to Rameswaram in Tamil Nadu.
Ram Navami (March/April) is the grandest celebration, marked by the noon Surya Tilak ritual where focused natural sunlight forms a divine mark on Ram Lalla's forehead. Deepotsav during Diwali illuminates the entire temple precinct and Sarayu riverfront with millions of oil lamps. Other major observances include Vivah Panchami and the Sawan Jhula Utsav.

Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Mandir
The supreme festival celebrating the birth of Lord Rama. Highlights include the engineered Surya Tilak at noon, continuous recitations of the Ramcharitmanas, special floral shringar, and millions of pilgrims taking holy bath in the Sarayu.
The temple is built in the classical Māru-Gurjara sub-style of North Indian Nagara architecture. Designed by the Sompura family of master architects, it features a grand elevated plinth (jagati), five sequential mandapas, intricately carved pillars, and a curvilinear shikhara rising 161 feet above the sanctum.
Structural steel and iron have a limited lifespan due to corrosion and rust. To ensure a projected lifespan exceeding 1,000 years, the temple was built entirely of high-density pink sandstone from Bansi Paharpur, joined using traditional interlocking stone joinery with non-corrosive copper pins.
The Surya Tilak is an optomechanical engineering marvel designed by the Central Building Research Institute (CBRI) and the Indian Institute of Astrophysics (IIA). Every year on Ram Navami at exactly 12:00 PM, a series of precision mirrors and lenses in the temple spire captures natural sunlight and redirects a 58 mm circular beam directly onto the forehead of the Ram Lalla idol for 3 to 4 minutes.
General darshan is free and does not require advance booking. Special passes for Mangala Aarti (4:30 AM), Shringar Aarti (6:30 AM), and Shayan Aarti (10:00 PM) can be booked free of cost through the official website of the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust (srjbtkshetra.org) or at trust counters in Ayodhya, subject to valid government ID verification.
Mobile phones, smartwatches, cameras, large bags, food, tobacco products, and leather items (including leather belts and wallets) are strictly prohibited beyond the security checkpoint. The trust provides free, secure locker facilities near the Pilgrim Facilitation Centre.
