According to tradition, the temple marks the spot where Lord Hanuman stayed while guarding the Ramkot (fortress of Lord Rama) during his exile. The original structure dates to the 10th century, built by the saint Baba Bhagwan Das. The temple is also associated with Saint Tulsidas, who is said to have prayed here. The current structure was rebuilt with assistance from the Nawab of Awadh, giving it a distinctive blend of Hindu and Islamic architectural elements.
The temple is managed by the Nirvani Akhara, which has maintained its traditions unbroken for centuries.
