The temple stands at Tulsipur in Balrampur district, about 25 km from the district headquarters and 70 km from Gonda. The shrine's own historical account points to an inscription found at Devipatan that links the first temple here to Gorakhnath. The existing temple structure is traditionally ascribed to the emperor Vikramaditya, though no surviving record confirms that attribution. The temple's own account also cites entries in the 1871 Oudh Gazetteer and the 1885 Imperial Gazetteer for the Devipatan monastery.
