The temple stands at Tamluk in Purba Medinipur district, on the bank of the Rupnarayan river where the ancient port of Tamralipta once lay. Local accounts credit the original foundation to a king of the Mayur dynasty, and the present structure is a later rebuild on that site. The temple was rebuilt after the medieval period, and old Bengali literature refers to the shrine more than once.
Freedom fighters of Midnapore took oaths at this shrine, and Khudiram Bose is said to have come here to offer puja.
