Built in 1643 AD by King Raghunath Singha Dev, the Shyam Rai Temple represents the high point of Malla dynasty temple architecture. The king was a devout Vaishnava and built several temples in Bishnupur, with Shyam Rai being the oldest surviving Pancha-ratna temple. A foundation plaque found in the temple dates it to 1643 and names King Raghunath Singha of Mallabhum as its builder.
The temple is named in India's UNESCO World Heritage tentative-list submission of July 1998, filed by the Archaeological Survey of India.
