The modern revival of Mayapur began in the late 19th century under Bhaktivinoda Thakura (1838–1914), a deputy magistrate and Gaudiya Vaishnava scholar who identified the historical birth site of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu at Yogapeeth with the assistance of Jagannatha Dasa Babaji. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, founder-acharya of ISKCON, established the foundation for Sri Mayapur Chandrodaya Mandir on land purchased near the confluence.
Over five decades, the complex expanded from a single thatched hut (preserved as Prabhupada's Bhajan Kutir) into a sprawling international cultural and educational pilgrimage complex. The current phase is anchored by the Temple of the Vedic Planetarium (TOVP), commissioned to fulfill Srila Prabhupada's vision of an architectural depiction of the cosmos according to the Bhagavata Purana.
