According to regional historical chronicles, the present temple was erected in 1729 CE by Raja Bharamalla, a local chieftain. Traditional accounts record that his brother, Mukundadas, noticed that cows grazing in the dense bamboo groves consistently discharged milk at a particular stone spot. Upon excavation, a self-manifested (swayambhu) lingam was discovered, leading Raja Bharamalla to commission the brick-built Atchala shrine.
The temple has been under the spiritual guardianship of the Mohants (abbots) of the Dasnami Shaivite order since the 18th century.
