The Hindu religious presence in Mizoram is concentrated in Aizawl and the district towns of Lunglei, Champhai, and Kolasib. The Kali Mandir in Aizawl's Chanmari neighborhood was established in 1965 by the Bengali and Nepali communities. The ISKCON temple, constructed in 1987 in the Ramthar area, represents the Gaudiya Vaishnava tradition and is active in interfaith dialogue with the Mizo Presbyterian Church.
The Kali Mandir is the oldest Hindu temple in Mizoram and the cultural center for the state's approximately 30,000 Hindu residents (2.75% of the population). The Kali Mandir is the central node for a small network including the Shiva Mandir in Lunglei (1988), Hanuman Mandir in Kolasib (1992), and Saraswati Mandir in Champhai (1995). Hindu pilgrims journey annually to Kamakhya in Guwahati (450 km) and Puri Jagannath. The ISKCON temple organizes an annual Ratha Yatra in Aizawl city center since 1995.
The Kali Mandir is a reinforced concrete structure measuring 20 by 12 meters with a flat roof and a 10-meter pyramidal shikhara painted white with red trim. The sanctum houses a black stone Kali idol imported from Kolkata, 1.1 meters tall, on a 1.5-meter granite pedestal with a silver umbrella canopy. The ISKCON temple features a 15-meter white marble-clad shikhara and a 30-meter prayer hall seating 500.
