The temple was established by the local Hindu community of Aizawl to serve as a central place of worship. Mizoram's Hindu population, though small, has maintained this temple as a vibrant center of faith and culture. The temple has grown over the years with contributions from devotees and the Mizoram government.
Census figures for Mizoram put Hindus at 30,136 people, about 2.75 percent of a state population of 1,097,206, and the community is concentrated in Aizawl. Christians make up 87.16 percent of that same population, which is why the city's Hindu temples serve a small and close-knit minority.
