Chhatarpur Temple

Goddess Katyayani is one of the nine forms of Goddess Durga (Navadurga). According to the Devi Mahatmya, the gods, unable to defeat the buffalo demon Mahishasura, created Goddess Durga from their collective energies. The goddess is called 'Katyayani' because she was born to the sage Katyayana through his penance. She is depicted as the fierce warrior goddess who rides a lion and holds weapons in her eight or ten arms.

The Chhatarpur Temple specifically venerates this form of the goddess who is believed to have enormous power to destroy evil and grant boons to her devotees. The temple is also known for the 'baba's gaddi' (the founder's seat), which devotees believe retains his spiritual energy and blessings.

Daily rituals follow the Shakta tradition. The temple opens at 5:00 AM with the Mangala Aarti. The Deity is bathed (Abhishekam) and adorned with fresh clothes and ornaments. The 'Bhog' (food offering) is made at noon.

The Sandhya Aarti at sunset is the most attended ritual. Special pujas are performed on Fridays and during the Navaratri period. The temple also conducts the 'Devi Mahatmya' recitation (Chandi Path) daily during Navaratri. The temple offers 'Akhand Jyoti' (perpetual lamp) services where devotees can sponsor a lamp that burns for 24 hours.

The temple is easily accessible from Delhi via Mehrauli-Gurgaon Road. The nearest metro station is Qutub Minar (6 km), from which taxis and auto-rickshaws are available. Parking is available but fills up quickly during peak days. Modest attire is required — the temple is conservative in its dress expectations. Photography is allowed in the temple complex but not inside the main sanctum. The temple can be combined with a visit to the Qutub Minar and other South Delhi attractions.

The Lotus Temple (12 km) is a Bahai House of Worship. The ISKCON Temple (14 km) is another major Delhi temple. The Chattarpur Farms area is known for its fine dining restaurants. The Delhi-Haryana border nearby offers access to the Sultanpur National Park (25 km).
