The temple was established by the local Hindu community of Dimapur to meet the growing need for places of worship as the city's population expanded. It has become an integral part of the religious landscape of Nagaland's largest city. The shrine was built in 1961 by the residents of Singrijan, a village on the edge of Dimapur, who pooled labour and materials for the construction.
The lingam came to light when a villager and his wife were sharpening tools on an unusual stone, and a liquid was seen oozing from its surface.
