Baijnath stands in Bageshwar district on the left bank of the Gomti, about twenty-two kilometres from Bageshwar town and sixteen kilometres from Kausani. The ancient name of the settlement was Kartikyapura, and it served as the capital of the Katyuri dynasty, the earliest ruling line of the central Himalayan region. Katyuri kings moved their seat from Joshimath to Kartikyapura around the eighth century, and the temple group grew around that new capital over the next four centuries.
The main shrine is dedicated to Vaidyanath, a form of Shiva, and the name Vaidyanath is said to have corrupted into Baijnath over time. The Archaeological Survey of India records the group as the Temples of Baijnath among the Monuments of National Importance in Uttarakhand, and the complex has been selected for the Kumaon Shiva Heritage Circuit under the Swadesh Darshan scheme.
