While the current structure dates to the 14th century, the temple site is believed to be over 2,000 years old. The 8th-century philosopher Adi Shankara renovated this temple. The current medieval structure saw additions by Maharaja Jawat Raj of Ratlam, though the original temple design was retained. A stone inscription in the temple's possession mentions repairs during the time of Sawai Jai Singh (1699-1743 CE).
The temple survived the widespread temple destruction during Aurangzeb's rule when many other Pushkar temples were demolished.
