The five temples in the complex were built by different individuals at different times. The most famous, the Vimal Vasahi temple, was built in 1031 AD by Vimal Shah, a minister of the Chalukya King Bhimdev I. Legend has it that Vimal Shah built the temple as a penance for his sins in war.
The Luna Vasahi temple, the second most prominent, was built in 1230 AD by the brothers Vastupal and Tejpal, who were ministers of the Vaghela ruler Viradhavala. The other three temples—Pithalhar, Parshvanatha, and Mahavir Swami—were added over subsequent centuries. Despite the remote location in the Aravalli hills, the transport of the massive marble blocks and the execution of the delicate carvings remain a marvel of medieval logistics and craftsmanship.
