ISKCON established its presence in Mizoram to spread the teachings of Bhakti Yoga as propagated by Srila Prabhupada. The temple was built with the support of the local and international ISKCON community.
ISKCON was founded in 1966 in New York by A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada and is now headquartered at Mayapur in West Bengal. Prabhupada arrived in New York in September 1965 at the age of seventy and incorporated the society from a storefront on the Lower East Side.
The temple plays a crucial role in promoting Vaishnavism in Northeast India and serves as a cultural bridge between the local Mizo community and the broader Hindu tradition. The temple organizes regular community meals (Sunday feast) and educational programs.
ISKCON's Tribal Care Initiative names the Mizo tribes of Mizoram among the communities it serves, alongside the Naga tribes of Nagaland. The initiative runs under GBC Bhakti Purusottama Swami, with Sridham Govinda Das as its chief coordinator for tribal outreach in India. Its stated remit covers physical, educational, social, emotional and spiritual support for tribal communities in remote parts of East and Northeast India.
Bhakti Purusottama Swami and the Tribal Care team place Bhagavad-gitas and small altars in tribal communities and plan prayer halls for them. 75 percent.
Daily programs include morning and evening aartis, kirtans (devotional singing), and Bhagavad Gita classes. The Sunday feast is a weekly highlight.
Janmashtami (Krishna's appearance day) is celebrated with grandeur. Ratha Yatra, Gaura Purnima, and Diwali are also major celebrations.
The annual tribal convention at Mayapur is timed to coincide with the Rama Navami festival at ISKCON's headquarters, when delegates from the focus states travel to West Bengal.
The India Tribal Care Trust was approaching its tenth anniversary at the convention held in Mayapur in March 2025. More than a hundred volunteers organized that three-day event, with delegations coming from more than ten states. Educational support under the tribal program includes primary schools, scholarships, study material and sponsorship for higher study at the Vrindavan Gurukula.
Aizawl is accessible via Lengpui Airport (35 km). The temple is located in central Aizawl. Lengpui Airport, the state's only commercial airfield, lies in Mamit district and connects Aizawl with Delhi, Kolkata, Guwahati, Imphal and Silchar.
Durtlang Hills (5 km), Solomon's Temple (2 km), Mizoram State Museum (2 km). Sri Lakshmi Narayan Temple (1 km) is nearby. Solomon's Temple, the Kohhran Thianghlim church in the Kidron Valley, is the most visited tourist site in Aizawl and stands apart from the city's Hindu shrines.
The temple offers daily aartis, Bhagavad Gita classes, Sunday feasts, and festival celebrations.
It is the ISKCON program that provides spiritual, educational, emotional, social and health care to tribal communities, and it explicitly lists the Mizo tribes of Mizoram.
The convention is held once a year at ISKCON's headquarters in Mayapur during Rama Navami, and the ninth edition took place in March 2025.
