As Kavaratti evolved from a modest atoll settlement into the designated administrative headquarters of the Union Territory in 1964, the historic central Juma mosque underwent phased expansion programs to accommodate the burgeoning population of resident islanders, government personnel, and maritime travelers. Retaining its traditional coral stone structural core and timber ceiling frameworks, the mosque was respectfully upgraded with modern amenities, expanded ablution reservoirs, and acoustic enhancements under the stewardship of the island's Wakf board and senior Qazis.
