Local folklore and oral historical traditions trace the antiquity of Saketri Temple back to the Dvapara Yuga and the Mahabharata epic. According to legend, the five Pandava brothers, during their exile in the Shivalik hill forests, took refuge in this valley and consecrated a shrine here to perform rigorous penance to Lord Shiva. Archaeological stone remnants in the vicinity suggest that the site has been continuously worshipped for many centuries by local pastoral and farming communities.
In modern times, the temple complex was respectfully expanded with durable stone and brick structures while preserving the ancient inner sanctum that houses the original Shiva Lingam.
