According to regional tradition, the shrine dates back to the medieval era with local lore connecting the spot to the Pandavas' exile. When independent India's new planned capital was founded in 1953 by prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru and urban planner Le Corbusier, the metropolis was named 'Chandigarh' after this venerated fortress-sanctuary of Goddess Chandi.
