Built in the 12th century by a general of the Chand Dynasty, the temple has been the primary seat of Golu Devta worship for centuries. According to legend, Golu Devta was a historical figure — a brave general who served the Chand kings and was later deified for his justice and valor. The temple has remained an active center of Kumaoni folk religion for over 800 years.
The tradition of offering bells and filing written petitions has grown exponentially in recent decades, making the temple visually unique.
