Mahamuni stands in Manubankul village in the northeastern part of Sabroom sub-division, in South Tripura district. The monastery was constructed under the leadership of Mathu Mog and others, and a pagoda was raised beside it. The Mog community dominates the village, and the Chakma, Mog and Barua communities of Tripura have been traditionally Buddhist. The Bankul Mahamuni Buddha Temple committee manages the shrine and organizes the annual festival held on its premises.
Chief Minister Manik Saha unveiled 28 Buddha statues at the temple when he opened the festival in March 2025. The state government has pledged support to complete an international Buddhist university at Sabroom, a short drive from the shrine.
