The temple was built by Maharaja Dhanya Manikya in 1501 AD. Legend says he was instructed in a dream by Goddess Tripura Sundari to move her idol from Chittagong to this location. The temple has been a center of worship for the royal family of Tripura for centuries.
The shrine measures 24 square feet at the base and rises to a height of 75 feet, with a square sanctum and a conical dome. Legend also records that the king found an older temple to Vishnu on the same hillock, and a second dream told him that Vishnu and Shakti are the same reality. The temple is administered by the Mata Tripura Sundari Temple Trust, whose sevait is the District Magistrate and Collector of Gomati district.
