The original temple is believed to have been built during the 6th century or even earlier. However, the current structure was constructed by the Koch King Raghudeva Narayan in 1583 AD after the earlier temple was destroyed by Kalapahar. Some historians suggest that the site was once a Buddhist pagoda before it was converted or assimilated into a Hindu temple. The temple has enjoyed the patronage of various Ahom kings, who made significant grants and additions to the complex.
The blend of Hindu and Buddhist traditions here is a remarkable example of the religious synthesis that has characterized the history of Assam.
