The history of Chintpurni Temple is a blend of Pauranic antiquity and the historical lineage of its traditional caretakers. According to the Devi Bhagavata Purana, when Lord Vishnu used his Sudarshana Chakra to dismember the body of Sati, her feet (specifically the soles) fell at this location. Some traditions also associate it with her forehead. The modern establishment of the shrine is credited to Pandit Mai Das, a Saraswat Brahmin who lived approximately 26 generations ago.
Legend has it that the Goddess appeared to him in a dream and instructed him to build a temple at the spot in the village of Chhaproh (the original name of Chintpurni). Mai Das, initially hesitant, was granted divine visions and signs that convinced him of the Mother's presence. His descendants continue to serve as the traditional priests (Pandas) of the temple to this day, maintaining a legacy of service that spans centuries.
The temple town has grown around the shrine, evolving from a secluded forest spot into a bustling spiritual hub that serves as a vital node in the Teen Devi and Nau Devi pilgrimage circuits.
