Padmanabhaswamy Temple

Because the consecrated idol is 18 feet in length, reclining in the Yoga Nidra posture on the five-headed serpent Adishesha, the sanctum features three separate doorways on the elevated single-stone platform (Ottakkal Mandapam): through the first (northern) door, pilgrims view the Lord's crowned face, chest, and right hand blessing a Shiva lingam; through the second door, Lord Brahma seated upon the lotus emerging from the sacred navel; and through the third door, the divine lotus feet adorned with golden bells.

The temple enforces a strict traditional dress code: Men must wear a clean Mundu (white dhoti) around the waist and remain completely bare-chested; shirts, banyans, vests, trousers, and pyjamas are strictly forbidden. Women must wear a Saree, Set-Mundu (half-saree), or traditional long skirt with blouse; modern salwar-kameez with dupatta is permitted, but jeans, western outfits, and shorts are not allowed. Dhotis can be rented or purchased immediately outside the eastern gate.

Twice every year—during the spring equinox (circa March 21) and autumn equinox (circa September 22)—the setting sun aligns precisely with the seven tiers of the eastern gopuram. Observers in the courtyard witness the sunset beam pass through the central window apertures of each successive tier from top to bottom at five-minute intervals, demonstrating sophisticated astronomical calculation in 18th-century temple architecture.

No electronics of any kind (including mobile phones, smartwatches, cameras, and power banks) or large leather bags are permitted inside the complex. Secure, tokenized cloakrooms and shoe deposit facilities are maintained outside the East and North gates by the temple administration.

By established custom, only practicing Hindus are allowed beyond the gopuram entrance. Foreign nationals and non-Hindus who profess faith in the principles of Hinduism may enter upon submitting a signed declaration of faith at the temple administrative office before joining the queue.
