Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple

Srirangam covers an immense area of approximately 156 acres (63.1 hectares or 631,000 m²), organized inside seven concentric rectangular stone enclosures (prakarams) with 21 gateway towers (gopurams). Unlike Angkor Wat—which is an archaeological monument currently dedicated to Buddhist practice—Srirangam functions continuously as an active, inhabited temple-city with residential quarters, bazaars, and monastic centers inside its outer walls.

The 21-foot reclining idol of Lord Ranganatha is not carved from stone. Instead, it is crafted from a sacred Ayurvedic stucco formulation known as 'Katusarkara Yogam'—a consecrated blend of 108 herbs, crushed river shells, natural resins, lime, and medicinal earths. Consequently, water abhishekam is never performed directly on the main reclining idol; instead, ablutions are offered to the silver processional deity (Utsava Murti).

The Paramapada Vasal, or 'Gate to the Supreme Abode', is a special ceremonial doorway in the second enclosure that remains sealed for 364 days each year. On the dawn of Vaikunta Ekadasi in Margazhi (December/January), the gates are opened as Lord Ranganatha processes through in royal regalia. Walking through this portal on this day is held in Vaishnava theology to grant direct spiritual liberation from the cycle of rebirth.

Non-Hindus and foreign visitors are welcome to explore the first four outer enclosures, the monumental gopurams, the museum, the rooftop view terrace, and the Hall of 1000 Pillars. However, entry into the inner sanctum sanctorum (beyond the fifth enclosure / Arya Bhata Vasal) is strictly reserved for practicing Hindus as per statutory HR&CE regulations.

Traditional modest clothing is mandatory to proceed past the inner enclosures. Men are required to wear a traditional dhoti (veshti) or pyjama with upper cloth; shirts must be removed before entering the inner sanctum. Women must wear sarees, half-sarees, or salwar kameez with a dupatta. Western attire such as shorts, bermudas, and mini-skirts are prohibited.
