The Koranganatha Temple was built during the reign of Parantaka Chola I (907-955 CE), a foremost early Chola ruler. Parantaka I expanded the Chola kingdom significantly and was a great patron of temple construction. The temple is dated to approximately the mid-10th century based on its architectural style and inscriptions. The Chola dynasty, which rose to power in the 9th century, underwent significant architectural development during Parantaka's reign, and the Koranganatha Temple represents an important stage in this evolution.
After the Chola period, the temple fell into disuse and was largely forgotten until it was brought under the protection of the Archaeological Survey of India in the 20th century. The temple has undergone conservation work to preserve its original carvings and structure.
