Patal Bhuvaneshwar is a limestone cave temple in the village of Bhubneshwar, fourteen kilometres from Gangolihat in the Pithoragarh district of Kumaon. Tradition credits King Rituparna of the Surya dynasty with first entering the cave in the Treta Yuga, and the story is told in the Manas Khand of the Skanda Purana. Adi Shankaracharya is said to have rediscovered and consecrated the cave in 1191 CE, and that visit is taken as the start of its modern pilgrimage history.
The Bhandari priest families have tended the shrine since that visit, and their line of service is now more than twenty generations old. Regular worship has continued at the cave from Shankaracharya's time, which is why the site is treated as an active temple rather than a show cave.
