The ancient Murudeshwar Temple has roots dating to the 13th century when it was believed to have been sanctified by the great sage Vedavyasa. The original structure was influenced by the Vijayanagara Empire, which controlled this coastal region. According to local legend, the demon Mura was slain by Shiva at this very spot, and the linga was installed there by the gods. The temple was rebuilt by the Vijayanagara kings and later by the Keladi Nayakas.
In 2008, the modern additions—including the towering Shiva statue and the massive Raja Gopuram—were completed under the leadership of businessman R. N. Shetty, transforming the modest temple into a monumental pilgrimage destination.
