The Kedareshwara Temple was built in 1319 CE during the reign of Hoysala king Veera Ballala III. By this time, the Hoysala kingdom was in decline, facing invasions from the Delhi Sultanate under Alauddin Khalji and later Malik Kafur. Despite these pressures, Ballala III continued the Hoysala tradition of temple building. The temple was constructed a little over a century after the larger Hoysaleswara Temple (c.
1160 CE) in the same town. After the Hoysala decline in the mid-14th century, Halebidu was sacked, but the temple survived largely intact due to its solid stone construction. The temple was brought under the protection of the Mysore Archaeological Department in the late 19th century and has since been maintained by the Archaeological Survey of India.
